The centre of the island is known locally as Es Pla, the southern part of which is mostly rolling countryside made up of small farms interspersed with pretty villages and market gardens.
The area has remained largely unchanged for centuries. It is this regions that has the greatest number of old windmills, used to draw water up from underground to irrigate the crops and for general use in the farms and homes in this area.
Agriculture here is varied with produce including capers, potatoes, and apricots.
The area is also well-known for salt
production where natural salt is
harvestedfrom wetlands to the south of
the region. These have been adapted to
this purpose over the years and the salt produced is used locally and exported.
Tourism is less prevalent in this area and is focussed mostly on the South Coast resorts such as Sa Rapita and Cala Pi. There are some very good agro-tourism hotels - the charming small country house hotels that are to be found throughout Mallorca.
This part of the Central Plain is less densely populated than the northern part. Llucmajor is the main town and centre for agriculture and commerce in the area. There are a few other small towns which are very much local farming communities. There are also some wonderful old country houses in this region.
Llucmajor is not so well known amongst the British. It has a deep history and is an agricultural centre and market town, the most important local crop being apricots. The countryside around here is less mountainous but still very lovely. Llucmajor is not a prime destination for those looking for a holiday home or second semi-permanent property, but does offer interesting opportunities for those looking to relocate to Mallorca with property prices here being more affordable than other locations this close to Palma.
