Less well known than the beach resorts of Magaluf, Peguera and Santa Ponsa which lie in the Calvia Municipality, Calvia Town is the administrative centre of this region.
Quiet and traditional, it is located on a small hillside overlooking typically beautiful Mallorcan countryside, and offers a classic "Old Town" environment.
The Calvia region has prospered from tourism and is reputedly one of the wealthiest municipalities in Europe. It used however to be a relatively poor town and, whilst the wealth of the region is evident, Calvia has managed to retain its character.
Partly this is because of the preservation of the old historical architecture and restrictions on new building works, and also because the Mallorquins themselves tend to be discrete and not terriby ostentatious. So their wealth is not displayed in the same way as it is in many other countries.
