This is a beautiful stretch of coastline and is one of the more remote and lesser known part of the island. The South Coast features some lovely beaches including Es Trenc which is perhaps the most famous beach in Mallorca, and the area remains relatively undeveloped.
To get to the town you pass the salt lakes - small lakes that have been adapted into natural salt production. The salt is highly prized for cooking being sold locally and shipped onto the mainland as well as to other European countries. Other than this the countryside along the coast is mostly agricultural and is quite flat, but very pretty nonetheless.
The southern tip where Colonia de Santa Jordi is located is similarly undeveloped. The town is located on a rocky headland with lovely sandy beaches set into it. The beach in the town never becomes too crowded, and if you are seeking more solitude you can walk further along where the beach becomes backed by rolling sand dunes.
Colonia de Santa Jordi is also the place to take a day trip out to the Island of Cabrera, an island and marine nature reserve that is very popular for day-trippers. There are no hotels and even boats are not allowed to moor overnight, so the island remains very much as nature created it.
