Badia de Palma "The Bay of Palma" is the largest bay in Mallorca and home to one of the most cosmopolitan and elegant cities in Europe. Almost half of the 700,000 or so permanent residents of Mallorca live in Palma City.

Palma de Mallorca is the seat of the Regional Authority for the Balearics, which has regional independence from Spain. The towns prestigious status is heightened by the fact that the Spanish Royal family have palaces here which they use regularly.

Palma is dominated by Palma Cathedral which overlooks a city centre made up of a unique mixture of historical and modern architecture. It has become a leading European centre for style and cuisine. It also has one of the most well-known and extensive harbours in the Mediterranean which is home to boats ranging from local fishing boats to modern ultra-luxury super-yachts.

There are a number of distinct areas to Palma City. These range from the historical buildings of Palma Old Town to the more recently built properties of Paseo Maritimo.

Palma is often quoted as being one of the most desirable places in the world to live. And for good reason. As well as the stunning beauty of its architecture, Palma City boasts a deep history and culture, set in a lively and cosmopolitan environment with an abundance of restaurants, high quality shops, night-life, museums and art galleries, and other rich and varied places of interest and entertainment.

It used to be that tourists passed Palma by in order to get straight to the beach. But Mallorca as a whole is more sophisticated now and Palma City has become a place to visit for mainland Spanish as well as people from all over the world.

The permanent population here is made up both of local Mallorquins and all other nationalities, with the British, German and Scandinavians being much in evidence.

Accessibility

The journey time from Palma de Mallorca and the airport to Palma de Mallorca is around 5 to 10 minutes depending on traffic.

Palma is surrounded by a ring road the "Via Centura" and this spurs off to the main motorways which radiate out to all the key areas. So the South West Coast, North West Coast, North Coast, North East Coast, East Coast, South East Coast and South Coast of Mallorca are all within easy reach and there are few places that cannot be reached within one hour.
