The Bay of Palma is the largest bay in Mallorca and is populated by Palma itself and a string of varied beach resorts and communities. This is the main residential part of Mallorca as well as the centre of its commerce.
The sea front of Palma has been modified through reclamation and is largely given over to marinas and facilities for commercial ships and holiday cruisers. The rest of Palma Bay is made up of a mixture of sandy beaches and rocky coastline with
some sandy coves. Some of these have
been developed into resort towns such
as Illetes, and others such as Portixol,
molinar and Can Pastilla are old fishing
villages that have changed over time to cater the leisure boating and holiday industries that have become prevalent.
There is a great variety to this coastline and the towns mentioned are all-year-round communities. And whilst this is the most built-up part of Mallorca Palma is a small city and one does not have to venture far in any direction to be in the countryside looking out over the bay.
Palma de Mallorca Airport, previously known as Aeropuerto de Son Sant Joan, is located 8 km to the East of Palma City.
Palma de Mallorca is one of the most elegant and cosmopolitan cities in Europe. Dominated by its grand cathedral, Palma City is a unique mixture of historical and modern architecture and has become a leading European centre for style and cuisine. It also has one of the most famous harbours in the Mediterranean home to vessels ranging from local fishing boats to modern super-yachts.
Palma is regarded as one of the most desirable places in the world to live, with a wide range of types of property forming both permanent homes and second homes for foreigners as well as wealthy Mallorquins with country homes or homes overseas.

The two locations merge with each other, with Cala Major being a bit more touristy in character with more recently built apartments and many bars and restaurants. St Agusti has some very grand old coastal villa properties and a character that in some ways is similar to that of Illetes. This is an interesting location for people looking for a holiday apartment very close in to Palma, or those looking for a villa or apartment property as a permanent home in a "resort" location but a few minutes from the city.
