One of the larger country towns in Mallorca, Santa Maria is just to the northwest of Palma. Once a stopping place for travellers heading for the north or east parts of Mallorca, Santa Maria is now a lively traditional market town.

Santa Maria functions both as a centre for local agriculture and commerce as well as being a dormitory town for Palma de Mallorca. Conditions are good here for growing vines so the wine industry is prevalent here as well as in the neighbouring town of Binissalem.

This is a colourful community with all the elements of a classic Mallorca Old Town, whilst also having a cosmopolitan feel that has attracted locals and foreigners alike to seek second homes here as holiday or weekend-getaway properties. Santa Maria offers a selection of fine restaurants and tapas bars as well as some more international restaurants.

The successful agriculture of this region has led to Santa Maria being a relatively wealthy place with an air of sophistication to it. It is not a busy tourist destination either, more a stopping-off place for day-trippers seeking places if interest, and for the cyclists who flock to Mallorca each year in the Spring.

The Sunday market in Santa Maria is one of the most popular markets amongst locals, and people come from miles around to visit and stock up on the wide range of produce that is available.

Accessibility

The journey time from Palma de Mallorca and the airport to Santa Maria is around 20 minutes or a tad less. There are several rural towns close by including Alaro and Binissalem. Inca is a short drive away and Palma de Mallorca is also within easy reach so evening out are viable from this location.
