Located just to the west of Inca, Binissalem is a town well known as being the centre of Mallorca's wine industry.

Wine making goes back a long way in Mallorca, to the first century BC in fact. Having been started by the Romans it reached a very high standard and achieved plaudits from all over the world. The protection offered by the Traumantana mountains from the northerly winds creates an ideal microclimate and this combines with rich limey soil that is highly conducive to the quality of grapes required.

The Mallorca wine industry declined and for a long time the wines were not highly regarded and little investment was made, but in recent years this has changed and Mallorcan wines are now once again regarded as amongst the best produced in Spain.

Binissalem is, therefore, a thriving and wealthy agricultural community. It is a day-trip destination for holiday makers and locals too, with most people heading for the bodegas to sample and purchase the produce.

The surrounding countryside is very pretty. Whilst it is relatively flat, it is characterised by the vineyards and also many almond plantations which add dramatic colour to the landscape in February when the blossom is out.

Accessibility

The journey time from Palma de Mallorca and the airport to Binissalem is around 20 minutes. The town is within easy reach of a number of other rural towns including Alaro, Marratxi and Bunyola. The larger towns of Inca and Santa Maria are close by and the city of Palma de Mallorca is an easy 20 minute drive.

Properties in Binissalem are mostly tractional townhouses some of which have been refurbished and some of which are still awaiting someone to turn them into a comfortable and modern home.

Also in the town there are a some very grand mansions dating back to the 18th Century when the wine making first flourished on the island. There are both old and new country houses in the surrounding countryside.
