Alaro is a pretty village in the foothills of the Traumantana mountains. It used to be of great strategic importance and the dominant feature of the village is Castell d'Alaro which has been a refuge from invaders at various points through Mallorca's history.

As with most other towns and villages in Mallorca, Alaro has a colourful history. In the 17th and 18th centuries Alaro was a favoured hiding place for bandits as well as being a trading centre for mountain produce including animal skins and olive oil. And in 1901 Alaro became the first place in Mallorca to get electric lighting, paid for by two local business-owning brothers. Even Palma did not have electricity at that time!

These days Alaro is a centre for the agriculture around the town, which is mostly made up of olives and citrus fruits. Alaro is also a thriving market town.

In terms of tourism, Alaro is a popular day-trip destination for people looking to experience the real rural side of Mallorca, and savour the mountain scenery that is the back-drop to the town.

There are some excellent restaurants here as well as some very good "locals" tapas bars.

Alaro has also become a dormitory town for people working in Palma and is a popular location for wealthier Palma residents to own a second home.

Accessibility

The journey time from Palma de Mallorca and the airport to Alaro is around 20 minutes. Alaro is also within easy reach of other rural locations such as Orient and Bunyola.

The large towns of Binissalem and Santa Maria are within easy reach and Inca, Mallorca's third largest town, is also just a short drive away.

Property in Alaro

Alaro is a typical Mallorcan small-town. Within easy reach of Palma, Alaro is most likely to be attractive to those seeking a permanent home or semi-permanent get-away in a traditional Mallorcan environment.

Styles of property are primarily traditional townhouses, some of which have been converted into apartments, as well as country house finca properties in the surrounding countryside.

There is quite a range in values as properties are owned by local farm workers ranging to wealthy folk from Palma as well as owners from abroad.
