Soller retains its character and offers a cosmopolitan environment that mixes traditional Mallorcan and contemporary international cultures. It is a favoured haunt amongst artists, musicians and other creatives as well as being a popular destination for holiday makers and day-trippers.
Before the tunnel Soller was cut off by the mountains making it quite isolated from the rest of Mallorca. So trade, focussed on the locally grown oranges and lemons, was mostly with the South of France as well as Barcelona.
The Soller Valley is known as "El valle de los naranjas" (The Valley of the Oranges). This local agriculture was originally established by the Arabs in the 8th century. They built the irrigation that you can still see in Soller to feed to orange and olive groves with water.

Soller is famous as a walking destination and is also a centre for cycling holidays. The roads around here and up into the mountains offer perfect territory for serious cyclists and there are some international that pass through this area on their route through various Serra de Traumantana Mountain villages.
The journey time from Palma de Mallorca and the airport to Soller is around 25 minutes via the toll tunnel through the mountains. As well as Palma, Soller Old Town is within easy reach of Deia, Fornelutx and other mid-Serra de Traumantana Mountain locations.
There is also the Soller mountain train that runs to here from Palma passing through glorious countryside and stopping at mountain villages on the way. There is a regular tram between Soller Old Town and Puerto de Soller
Properties in Soller are mostly traditional townhouses, some of which are simple and relatively affordable, other of which are very grand and have been renovated to very high standards. There are some beautiful country house finca properties in the surrounding countryside and mountains.
This is an area to consider for stunning Mallorca mountain scenery mixed with a a location that has a depth of culture and sophistication to it.
The strong rental market plus the desirability of the area to locals and second home owners means that prices for properties in Soller are at the higher end for Mallorca, although slightly less expensive than they are in Puerto de Andratx or Puerto de Pollensa.
