Properties for sale in Deia
Deia is one of the most well-known destinations in Mallorca. Set on the shoreline of the Serra de Traumantana Mountains, the scenery around Deia is very dramatic and beautiful, with pine-clad mountains falling away steeply to the sea below.

The name "Deia" (or Deya) is another of Moorish origin. 'Ad-daia' means hamlet and it was the Moors who first cultivated the mountainside in this area to produce wine and olives. Deia's fame comes from its history as the home to many notable figures, and most of all as home to the author Robert Graves who lived in Deia for much of his life.

As well as Robert Graves Deia lists The Archduke Luis Salvador, Manuel de Falla, Santiago Rossinyol, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Mati Klarwein, Kevin Ayers, Pierce Brosnan and the late Princess Diana as regular visitors, many of whome had homes there.

The town has been a permanent and holiday home for many other celebrities from Grave's era right through to the current day. Robert Grave's son still lives in Deia and is also a writer. His book "Wild Olives: Life in Majorca with Robert GravesWild Olives: Life in Majorca with Robert Graves " is heartily recommended is you want to get a real feel for Deia, its history and characters from its past, and a real insight into Mallorca of old!

Getting back to Deia, this is a small village with a selection of good restaurants and tapas bars as well as a number of up-market hotels including La Residencia in the town and a number of others close by.

Places close-by

The commercial history of Deia lies in the terraces around the town which are given over to olive groves. Visitors first began to come to the area in the 1800s and it soon became a favoured haunt amongst the artists, writers, musicians and celebrities of that era.

But despite its fame Deia has retained it's charm. Coaches are not allowed to stop here and parking is limited. Whilst it might be possible to find more "authentic" Mallorcan locations, that misses the point of what Deia is all about. It is totally unique in its history and there is probably no where else quite like it anywhere in the world.

Accessibility

The journey time from Palma de Mallorca and the airport to Deia is around 35 to 40 minutes. Soller Old Town and Puerto de Soller are approximately 15 minutes drive away and Valldemossa can be reached in slightly less.

There are many good restaurants and tapas bars in the town and in the surrounding countryside and many that come here choose to stay and relax, basking in the atmosphere of Deia rather than trekking round the island site-seeing.

Property in Deia

The properties in Deia itself are traditional townhouses ranging considerably in size. There has been very little development here, and what there is has been done in a traditional Mallorcan style in keeping with the area. In the surrounding countryside there are some beautiful traditional country houses and fincas.

Bare in mind though that there are never many properties in Deia on the market. It is a small place and highly sought-after. Often properties are sold by prior agreement without coming onto the market at all.

Property Prices

As a consequence of the above prices here are amongst the highest on Mallorca. Just like all parts of Mallorca though there is a broad range in the prices as properties vary from converted apartments in the old townhouses to incredibly sumptuous country house properties that have been refurbished to the absolute height of luxury.

  • Apartments: from Euro 350.000
  • Townhouses: from Euro 400.000
  • Country houses: from Euro 850.000
