Cala Pi, Sa Rapita and Colonia Sant Jordi

These resorts are popular with the Spanish but relatively unknown to other nationalities, something that is attractive to those wanting a seaside location different to the more international resorts.

The exception perhaps is Cala Pi, a small and quiet resort built around an enchanting cala. Those that know it often return year-after-year. There are a few personable restaurants and bars and, other than this, it is a location for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful coastal scenery and sandy beach. Ease of access to Palma and the airport adds to the appeal.

Sa Rapita is situated to the center of the South Coast. Originally a fishing harbour, it was developed into a small resort in the 1970’s. Consequently parts of Sa Rapita have more modern developments but they are set back from the seafront and, overall, Sa Rapita retains the relaxed feel of an long-established resort.

Sa Rapita marina is home to both local fishing boats and small leisure craft. The Club Nautica restaurant opens onto the western end of Es Trenc, a stunning sandy beach with crystal clear blue waters. Understandably many aspire to owning a boat here but, as is the case with most of Mallorca’s harbours, moorings can be difficult to obtain.

Colonia Sant Jordi is another small harbour in an idyllic position with Es Trenc to its western side and further stretches of sandy beach and protected dunes leading from the town to the southeast. This is also is also the embarkation point for day trips to the Island of Cabrera, a marine nature reserve where you can see many birds and aquatic life including dolphins and, occasionally, whales.

As with Sa Rapita, there are some very good seafood restaurants along the town’s promenade.

Journey times from Palma and the airport are around 15 minutes to Cala Pi, 35 minutes to Sa Rapita and 45 minutes to Colonia Sant Jordi.

Properties and prices

Cala Pi offers a mixture of apartments and villas, with apartments start around €150,000 and villas around €600,000.

Prices in La Rapita are around the same for the older properties around the seafront. There are also a few newer developments with apartments and townhouses at attractive prices.

Properties in Colonia de Sant Jordi consists mostly of modern apartments and townhouses, again at attractive prices for a seaside resort in Mallorca.
