Sineu – a largely undiscovered town in the countryside of Es Pla (the central plain), Mallorca

Sineu is 20 minutes or so drive inland from the resorts and beaches of Northeast Mallorca, so inevitably it is relatively unknown outside of Mallorca. It has a great deal to offer though. Here is some more information on this intriguing country town along with some photos to give you more of a feel for the place.

Sineu is located to the north of the centre of Mallorca in the regions known as Es Pla – The Central Plain. It is just under half an hours drive from Palma de Mallorca and Palma airport. It is an old town and working Mallorcan agricultural community. As such it has not attracted holiday makes other than day-trippers and the inevitable cyclists touring the countryside.

However, as more people buy country houses in Mallorca as holiday properties, semi-permanent and permanent homes, unspoilt towns with “proper” all year round communities such as Sineu are becoming increasingly sought-after. And for good reason – Sineu has a lot going for it!

  • It is a classic unspoilt old town with lots of character and surrounded by lovely rolling countryside
  • It has plenty of very good restaurants and bars ranging from locals cafes and tapas bars to some superb restaurants
  • It is on the train line that runs from Palma to Inca and then to Manacor. Palma is commutable taking about 40 minutes each way (an infinitely more pleasant commuting experience than most in the UK!)
  • Palma is also within easy reach by car, as are the beaches of the East, Northeast and North Coast of Mallorca
  • It is an all-year-round community and home locals who work in nearby towns and the agricultural industries of the area, as well as an increasing number of non-locals from all part of the world
  • It is a centre of the wine industry in this part of Mallorca and offers some of the best bodegas on the island
  • There is a very good weekly market every Wednesday morning. It is regarded as the most traditional and popular market in Mallorca.

And very importantly, because Sineu is not so well-known and not in demand for holiday homes or holiday rental properties, the price of properties here is relatively low compared to many other parts of Mallorca. Sineu: history, places of interest and photo gallery

The most prominent building in Sineu, visible from far around, is The Parish Church of Santa Maria. This impressive building dates back as far as 1248 although it was damaged in a fire in 1505 and reconstructed at that time in the same Gothic style as the original building. The church was expanded further in 1880 and 1881. Attached to the church is the Rectory. Well worth a visit, the rectory is also home to a permanent exhibition of medieval ceramics.

There are many other historical buildings of note such as the town hall which is housed in the old building of the Convent del Mínims which is next to the Baroque-style church which forms part of the convent. In the streets of Sineu there are various medieval crosses and wells, and on the outskirts there are some classic Mallorcan windmills which were used to mill the wheat that forms an important part of the farming in this area.

And not all the places of interest are quite so old or historically focussed. The railway station building is a perfect example of the more modern and sophisticated side to Sineu. The station was built at the beginning of the 20th century and houses the Sineu Art Centre where contemporary artists can exhibit their work.
